Jump down from your high horse, let's talk truth Try something other than low-hanging fruit Pour out the champagne while I sing myself the blues This one's for you.
GENERALNAME: Mackenzie Augustina Prince IV, named after her grandfather, Mackenzie Augustus Prince, who was named after his grandfather. She shares this name with her oldest uncle as well, much to his chagrin. NICKNAMES: Kenzie, Kenz AGE/DOB: 17 / January 8 / Capricorn BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood. Kenzie is the first recorded wizard with the surname Prince in at least 200 years to not be a pureblood. GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female, she/her SEXUALITY: Bisexual HOMETOWN: Three Willows, Conneticut Three Willows is a small and magically-concealed wizarding community in Connecticut. It's full of bluebloods and fancy functions, and Kenzie is always picking dresses that aren't conservative enough for waltzing. CONCEPT: Heiress to a pureblood dynasty plays at being a femme fatale noir antihero. PHYSICALAPPEARANCE: Kenzie is a beauty and she knows it. With her fiery red hair and delicate features, she's never had to work very hard to feel beautiful, although she dedicates a lot of time to her appearance anyway. Kenzie's tall and slim, but has very few curves, much to her disappointment. Puberty is never going to let her fill out that Jessica Rabbit dress she dreams of wearing on Halloween one day. Her face is often coldly inexpressive, if she's not outright scowling, and she's almost never seen without makeup on. Kenzie is the kind of girl who walks down to the lodge in hiking boots, then pulls a pair of high heels out of her backpack to wear to class. In Outdoor Exploration you had better believe her makeup and hair look perfect. Her nails are never unpainted. Out of uniform, Kenzie is stylish and wealthy. She's exceedingly girly, and loves little frilly details, pink, and floral prints. She also loves looking a bit like a femme fatale, but as walking around in cocktail dresses all the time just isn't realistic, she settles for wishing she were Lana Del Rey something more restrained. HEIGHT: 5'9", but usually 6' in heels. PB: Laura Berlin PERSONALITYLIKES: Tiffany blue, ponies horses, horse figurines, unicorns, makeup, fashion, high heels, gossip, people with a good sense of humour, acts of heroism, brashness, having the odds stacked in her favour, cheer, horror, writing friendfiction, making people nervous, noir, murder mysteries, no-maj astrology even though she's very bad at it. DISLIKES: Filth, mess, people who can't take a joke, anyone who thinks the world revolves around their delicate feelings, being rushed, taking risks, uncertainty, whiners, sensitivity, acting, time limits, being condescended to, being doubted, heart-to-hearts, moralizing, lectures. PERSONALITY: Mackenzie Prince was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and the knowledge that a number of people thought she stole it from them. This created a cold, haughty girl who holds herself like she's above it all. Something about Kenzie looks like she hopes someone gets in her way so she can have the pleasure of tearing them down. She aims to be intimidating, and isn't the sort of prefect whose shoulder you can cry on. None of this is to say that Mackenzie is a serious person, though.
This composed blueblood princess has a truly obnoxious sense of humour. Kenzie loves teasing people, although the line between teasing and mocking is blurry with her. This means that her friendly ribbing quickly escalates into out and out making fun of people. She finds a great many things funny (goofy humour, inappropriate humour, dry humour), especially if someone else is the butt of the joke. Everything is so much funnier at the expense of someone else. Despite this, Kenzie is hard to make laugh. She may be tickled inside, but will barely crack a smile, and can be picky about when and what she finds to be truly worthwhile humor. The only possible bright side to all of this is that Kenzie has very thick skin, and can take as good as she gives. She expects everyone else to be like her, though, and if she offends them she doesn't usually handle it sensitively. Kenzie is quick to dismiss those she's hurt as overreacting or taking her too seriously. At least she's a little more gentle with her inner circle, but none of them are safe from her picking on them. Kenzie sees mild bullying as a perfectly legitimate expression of affection.
She loves the aesthetic of the femme fatale, and somewhere along the way it became a genuinely joyous experience to tease people and play up her femininity to intimidate others. She's aggressive about it, as well as uncomfortably morbid. It's clear that Kenzie finds violence and the horrific just a little bit funny, although after last year, her jokes have a little more baggage. Still, she'd rather crack wise about Ulysses' disappearance and her own brush with death than be honest and open about her fears. Mackenzie uses her sense of humor to approach things that make her uncomfortable. Emotional honesty doesn't come easily to Mackenzie. Still waters may run deep, but she doesn't want to talk about it.
Despite her love of fun and games, Kenzie's father raised a discerning young woman. Kenzie is determined and focused, and approaches goals in a methodical manner. As far as Kenzie is concerned, slow and steady wins the race. She'd prefer to play the long game, and is therefore not very opportunistic. However, she is ruthless when people get in her way. In her scheming, Kenzie is less of a backstabber, and more of an oncoming train. Kenzie deals with enemies with brute (verbal) force. Because of the resentment of her extended family, Kenzie is slow to trust, and quick to react to challengers. When she does feel seriously challenged, she's unrelenting and stubborn. Not the flighty kind of Azurcrest. She dislikes serious conflict (aka conflict that's not of her own making for funsies), though, because it's booooooring.
And yet, Kenzie would generally prefer to treat people well, assuming she thinks they're worth it. She remembers those who have done right by her, and enjoys returning kindnesses. She'll make efforts to be more considerate, more doting, or more tolerant of their flaws. So long as attending to her chosen people doesn't jeopardize her goals, Kenzie is a generous friend. She has "her people" who she feels very protective of, but she's generally a fairly low maintenance friend. She has her thing, her friends have their things, and she's happier that way. However, she always has an eye on what they're doing, keeping a look out for anyone who might be posing a threat to her loved ones.
Kenzie is fearful of risk. Risk to herself, risk to her family, risk to her friends. She plays things very safe, and searches out guaranteed wins. Loyal friends and reliable routines are her bread and butter. If she loves you and you ask her for advice, she's going to suggest you be cautious and realistic. Mackenzie loves her flights of fancy and writing over the top "friend fiction" about her friends, but in reality she stays very grounded. She's calculating when it comes to her actions, assessing every angle to make sure she has a strong base before making a move. Although she loves causing (mostly harmless) chaos, Kenzie likes to stick to the shadows where she won't get caught.
Despite how cool and collected Kenzie seems to be, she feels a lot more awkward than she acts. She's stilted and a little forced, with over the top charm that's very performative. Other members of her family are effortlessly magnetic while Kenzie feels like every social interaction is a guessing game. She charges through conversations, confident and bold, hoping that if she forces everyone to scramble to keep up with her, they won't notice she's uncomfortable.
tl;dr + discerning + confident + funny + thick skin + collected + protective = cautious = unemotional = wannabe femme fatale - mean sense of humor - unsympathetic - kind of a bully - cold, emotionally awkward - ruthless - avoids risk
SKILLSLANGUAGES SPOKEN: - English.
- Broken Bulgarian. Over the summer, Kenzie started learning Bulgarian as a show of solidarity with her best friend, Iliya Krum. She largely uses it to gossip with him.
PATRONUS: Kenzie can cast a full bodied patronus, and it's a spotted hyena. SKILLS: - Wand Repair & Study: Kenzie's father is an extremely successful wand repair expert who has built an extremely successful business. Kenzie's been trained to take over his wand repair business, which includes mastering wand repair. She's shown some skill in wand making as well, and her family hopes she can eventually help the business branch out to making their own line of wands. She's been discussing the possibility of traveling overseas to intern at Ollivander's.
- Dance/Cheer: Kenzie is an experienced dancer and cheerleader. She won't be called a prodigy in dance any time soon, but her height, strength and flexibility make her a solid cheerleader.
- Makeup/Cosmetics: It takes a lot of work to look the way Kenzie does every day.
- Singing: Kenzie sounds like a smoky lounge singer and is a trained amateur jazz vocalist. Some of her other musically inclined friends have been talking about starting a band. Vocal references: (x) (x - NSFW lyrics)
- Horseback Riding: Kenzie is a skilled rider who competes in events back home. She's even won a number of awards for dressage and show jumping.
- Society Daughter: Kenzie grew up in blueblood society surrounded by money and influence, although she may not always act the part of a well-behaved debutante. While she knows how to behave at fancy parties, and can waltz and rub elbows with the best of them, she tends to push the limits of acceptability when she's bored. Kenzie finds some rebellion in being just a little bit tacky.
HISTORYFAMILY MEMBERS: Efrain Prince, pureblood. Wand repair expert and entrepreneur, owner of Royal Wand Repair Services. Efrain built a business from the ground up that functions as a network of wand repair specialists that individuals can send their wands into for quick and reliable repair. It spans North America, and makes him and his family a great deal of money. His business is the gold standard in wand repair. Efrain himself is particularly deft with antique wands, and often handles very special cases himself. Kenzie is expected to take over his business. Maisie Prince, nee [open], halfblood. Housewife. Maisie is a woman with a buoyant sense of humor and a bottomless well of energy and attention to give to her girls. She's inclined to spoil them. Maisie is a good foil to the very serious and calculating Efrain. Natalie Prince, little sister, halfblood. Sophomore Ribbonfin.Mackenzie Prince, grandfather, pureblood. Retired. Mackenzie Sr. was an unkind man when he was younger, but towards the end of his life began to make amends. He regrets some of his judgmental views and how he treated his children. Unfortunately, in the last ten years he's developed dementia, and can't take care of himself anymore. He lives with Efrain, Maisie and Kenzie, where he has full time attendants to help him. Mackenzie Prince, uncle, pureblood. The eldest Prince son who was passed over for his successful youngest brother, Efrain. Foster Prince, pureblood.Justine Prince, pureblood.Approximately 12 cousins who really don't need names, pureblood.Edmond & Beatrice WolfhartKurt Wolfhart, second cousin, halfblood. Ribbonfin junior. HISTORY: FAMILY HISTORY & INFANCY. The Prince line is a very, very old pureblood line that came to North America during the colonial period. They invested everything in the California gold rush, and were wildly wealthy for about two generations. They had estates, mansions, horses, gold mines, and every indulgence they wanted.
But it didn't last. Fast forward to 1990's and the main line of Princes are destitute. All that remained of their former glory was their name, a handful of heirlooms and a dilapidated mansion in California. There was a branch of the Princes that broke off and was more successful, but they were considered Not Real Princes by the main line. (This branch will later result in a certain Ribbonfin boy.) 'Real' Princes are pure and stick to the old ways... but the old ways were not helping the modern Prince family.
Mackenzie Prince Sr. had four children. The eldest three were committed to maintaining the purity of their line, but all failed at restoring the family's former glory. The youngest son, however, decided to toss aside purity for money, and married a wealthy society daughter, Maisie, who was most definitely not a pureblood. The two weren't in love, but he needed capital and she wanted the prestige of a pureblood name. They made a good team, and even better friends.
No one in the family approved of the match, and their disdain became even more pronounced as Efrain used his new financial backing to create a hugely successful wand repair business. He quickly overtook all of his older siblings, and used his money to control the family. With his success and charm, he even managed to ingratiate himself to a much more successful and modern branch of the Prince line, one which had long since been rejected by the main bloodline. He moved his family to Connecticut to be near them, and encouraged his wife to embrace these Princes as though they were the closest of family ties. Maisie was relieved, frankly, as these distant relatives of her husband were worlds friendlier, even with their high standards. Not long after the move, the couple had a daughter. Efrain brazenly named her Mackenzie after his father.
But Mackenzie Sr. was slowly developing dementia, and as it turned out, Efrain was the only one of his children who could afford to care for him. Efrain moved Mackenzie Sr. to Three Willows to live with him and his family, far away from the other pureblood Princes. Mackenzie Sr. was feeling a deep regret for the life he had led, and Efrain saw an opening. He gained his often unloving father's apologies, and by the end of the year, Mackenzie Sr. had named little Kenzie the true heir to the Prince dynasty. This decision meant that Efrain managed to convince his father to skip all his older children and all of their legitimate pureblood children for Kenzie, the halfblood daughter of his youngest son. She was given the family wand at the tender age of eleven, just in time to be sent off to Ilvermorny and sorted into Wampus.
The Princes were furious, but powerless to do anything about it. They accused Efrain of manipulating their father for his own gains... which was not wholly untrue. But Efrain was also ferociously determined to look out for his children and his ailing father, whom he was slowly rebuilding a relationship with even as Mackenze Sr.'s health was deteriorating. Efrain dismissed his relatives as backwards bigots, and he and his family jumped eagerly into modern blueblood society.
CHILDHOOD. Efrain and Maisie raised Kenzie to be self-assured, but practical. They both knew her killer instinct is very important, and rarely, if ever, encouraged her to be nicer. Money was very important. Status was also very important. However, you can make money and status if you're clever. Kenzie was determined to be as clever as her father, and studied hard, both at school and in her personal quest to be a wand artist and repair witch that lived up to his name.
(Information on Natalie and her diagnosis will go here when she's in the game!)
GOOSEBERRY. Kenzie applied to Gooseberry because of the Artificing course it offered, and with her letters of recommendation and portfolio of wandmaking, she was given a scholarship. Efrain promptly turned down the scholarship and insisted on paying Kenzie's tuition anyway, with a quick quip to give it to a student that needed it. Whether this was arrogance or a memory of what it's like to be living in poverty, Kenzie was never sure.
Kenzie meshed oddly with Gooseberry, but wasn't going to be kept down. Her definition of "not being kept down" meant that she insisted on dressing to the nines every morning even when a mandatory hike was in her future. She continued to excel in classes, and her father was very pleased by her progress in learning about the fundamentals of wand making and repair. He often joked that the next stage in the Prince business was going to be making their own wands, heirloom quality wands, since Kenzie's knack for it was far beyond his own. "What can I say, we made a smart one."
She still found time for new hobbies, though, and her favorite quickly became cheer. Kenzie loved Quidditch (and Quidditch players), and cheer seemed like the thing to do when you were pretty and wanted to show off as you yelled for the Beaters to hit harder. Her parents were pleased once more as Kenzie excelled again, and became Cheer Captain. "Leadership skills," her father told everyone in earshot.
And when Kenzie began to go through a horse phase her parents indulged that too. (Although really, when has she not been in a horse phase? Her room at home has a floor to ceiling shelf of expensive horse figurines.) They gave her a winged horse of her own, got her a coach, and let her enter competitions. She was then lavished with praise for being such a responsible young woman, taking care of her horse and practicing so often. "Such a good head on her shoulders. Sense like you wouldn't believe," her mom told her friends over brunch.
Kenzie learned when she was sixteen that her 18th birthday present was going to be the Prince Manor and estate back in California... once her father kicked out her uncle and had it fixed up, of course. After all, whose name is going to be on the paperwork once his little girl comes of age? Mackenzie's life and success seemed inevitable.
JUNIOR YEAR. Mackenzie's junior year started as charmed as the previous ones, although one simple event sent her on a different course. The first day back, she met a new exchange student, Iliya Krum, who pretended not to speak English when she approached him. When she later found out he was lying, Kenzie thought it was hilarious, and the pair became close friends. Both a little awkward, they bonded almost instantly. Iliya was a wildly different sort of friend than the circles Kenzie usually ran in.
On top of that, she began to develop a romantic interest in Iliya's roommate, Ulysses Quayle. Their early flirtations were marked almost immediately by Ulysses' abrupt disappearance, where he was mysteriously lost in the woods overnight. He was found safe, but the rest of the school year was marked with looming danger. Kenzie drifted from her mean girl ways a bit as she became better friends with the other Ebonhide boys in her year, although she still found time to be a bit of a terror. Her relationship with Ulysses became more certain and exclusive, and whatever was going on in the woods seemed far away most days.
But then half of the student body was abducted, Ulysses and Cameron amongst them, and Kenzie joined Iliya, Casper and Wilde to go find those who had been lost. Along the way, Kenzie had a serious brush with death at the hands of a poltergeist. Mackenzie always knew one day she would have to grow up and stop playing around, but it came much faster and more violently than she anticipated. The silver lining is that when she received her prefect badge in the mail, Kenzie was much less mortified than she might have been last year. The prefect badge didn't feel like a curse, but instead like the power she needed to keep her loved ones and younger housemates safe.
SCHOOLYEAR: Junior HOUSE: Azurcrest SORTING: Ebonhide technically was the front runner for Kenzie's placement, but at the last minute she chose Azurcrest, because it sounded like more fun. She's never regretted this decision. WAND: Redwood with a dragon heartstring core, unyielding, 13". Kenzie's wand is an heirloom that was given to her by her grandfather, skipping a dozen or so legitimate pureblood heirs to end up in her hands. It's a difficult wand, but Kenzie is determined to master it. "Wand-quality redwood is in short supply, yet constant demand, due to its reputation for bringing good fortune to its owner. As is usually the case with wandlore, the general populace have the truth back to front: redwood wands are not themselves lucky, but are strongly attracted to witches and wizards who already possess the admirable ability to fall on their feet, to make the right choice, to snatch advantage from catastrophe. The combination of such a witch or wizard with a redwood wand is always intriguing, and I generally expect to hear of exciting exploits when I send this special pairing out from my workshop." FAMILIAR: A large African bullfrog, affectionately named His Highness. Kenzie dotes upon His Highness as though he were a kitten. A large, slimy, live-mouse-eating kitten. She sometimes invites lonely classmates looking for a prince to try kissing him. CLASSES: Charms, Hermeticism, History of Magic, Outdoor Education, Potions, Artificing, Defense Against the Dark Arts ADVANCED STUDY: Music. Kenzie had been in Divination for two years prior to this, but it became painfully apparent that she simply did not have the sight. Although there were members of the Prince line who claimed Seer blood, it must not have made it to Mackenzie. After some long discussions with Mr. Chettri and Ms. Thrussell, Mackenzie signed up for music instead as an alto jazz vocalist. SENIOR PROJECT: A paper on the repair and preservation of antique wands and wandmaking techniques. Her father has donated her a small collection of test cases, which means that locked up in the Artificing shed there's a series of beautiful, priceless wands, some of which are hundreds of years old. None of them work, but Kenzie's working on changing that. She can often be found tinkering with them in her free time. ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Kenzie is an accomplished student who works hard in class and manages excellent grades. She prefers to be fairly quiet in class, unless she sees an opportunity to offer humorous commentary. Her favorite classes are Artificing (She's a girl who loves a big, dangerous saw... or that's what she tells people. It's really because of her work with wands.) and Hermeticism. Her least favorite is DADA because Ms. Lilywhite doesn't find Kenzie funny at all. How rude. :( It's worth noting she does enjoy the material, though. EXTRACURRICULARS: - Prefect: Mackenzie feels unprepared to be a prefect, but after last year she's not about to sit around and do nothing with her new found authority. Kenzie idolized the sexy femme fatale when she was younger, but now she's trying to reimagine herself as the noir detective anti-hero instead. In earlier fantasies, the hero was always some righteous, sexy man or woman who would sweep into her life to be her foil. It's quite a change, but it might be a sign of maturation that she's decided she needs to be the hero and not simply wait around for one to shake up her life.
Mackenzie prioritizes Azurcrests welfare over anyone else, and assumes other prefects will look out for their houses similarly. She knows Azurcrest goes hard, and the girls in her house especially love to have a good time. Mackenzie is right there to make sure that anyone who jeopardizes that has to answer to her.
- Cheer: Until this year, Mackenzie was the cheer captain for Azurcrest.
After being made prefect, she chose to step down to focus on her other responsibilities. She still loves cheer, but prefect looks better on a resume than cheerleader.
- Equestrian Club.
- Boating: The Aesthetic. Kenzie likes to lounge around on the shore in her bathing suit with a big floppy hat, or let other people row while she looks cute in a nautical sweater. This might be especially frustrating once you learn she's pretty confident kayaking and with small sailboats.
- Outdoor Exploration: Kenzie sometimes skips OE when she's busy, but she enjoys the camping trips and learning to (safely) set things ablaze.
- Duelling & Fencing: Last year, Kenzie didn't take the dueling half of the class very seriously, but a romp in the woods with ghosts has made her significantly more interested. She's a better fencer than duelist, because he primary interest in magical dueling has always been getting to see everyone's different wands on display.
- Choir.
